REFLECTIONS
ON OUR GUATEMALAN EXPERIENCE FROM THE DENIS MORRIS STUDENTS WHO
VISITED IN MARCH
When
I arrived at the airport in Guatemala City, I never truly comprehended
how much my life would change. Over the past ten days people have
impacted my life in ways that words can not express. Through this
experience I have been able to question my Canadian life from the
inside out. I am grateful for this experience which will remain
with me forever. Chelsea
I thought the opportunity to come to Guatemala would allow me to
share the luxuries of my life with people who are not as fortunate
as me. The challenges that my life has had don't seem so great when
compared to the 12 year old girl who walks miles uphill with a jug
of water on her head or when I see women washing clothes in a lagoon
where animals bathe and go to the bathroom. I am so glad that I
was able to come here and see how another part of the world lives.

What really stuck me as amazing was the happiness, faith and hope
that the Guatemalan people have. The most memorable experience that
I had while here was visiting the orphanage. The young girls at
the orphanage have nothing yet their smile and laughter brighten
anyone's day. The gratefulness that these girls professed made me
feel guilty since I did almost nothing for them. This experience
has opened my eyes and helped me to understand that it is our responsibility
to use our knowledge to help others. Gillian
The beauty of Guatemala is striking and the people are so happy
and energetic despite their hardships. My most memorable day was
Saturday when we started to lay pipeline. Within minutes an entire
community of people had come to help. It was inspiring to be a part
of such a group effort. I know that I now have a more realistic
perspective of the world and although I cannot claim to be a new
person, I hope that this is the beginning of a more compassionate
self. Jordan

My experience here has been life changing. I have learned so much
in my short stay have always been concerned with poverty and human
rights but it was not until I saw it first hand, that I truly understood.
This week was amazing. I loved living in this close knit camp. I
can not imagine going back to my "real life". I will carry
the experience with me always and I can only grow from here. Randi
Circumstances
brought me here and I have never been so grateful. Standing in the
sunlight with all of God's gifts made the labour less grueling.
Wow! When I return to Guatemala or some other mission, I know that
this first experience will carry me through. It will help me to
teach others that ordinary people like myself can make a difference.
Thank you so much Wells of Hope Team. Your hospitality and love
have made me aware. Erin
