van der Zalm helps grandmother Mary van der Zalm take apart a quilt
at the Niagara Warehouse of Hope's sewing room. The quilt will be
cut up and resewn into several infant receiving blankets for young
mothers in the developing world. |
Sewing Group
A Niagara Warehouse of Hope Sewing Group meets weekly to create baby layettes
for needy young mothers in poor areas. This group, and a sub-group, the
St. Helen's Sewing Group,
cut and sew fabrics (new and used) to create the layettes which each consist
of two diapers, two safety pins, a nightshirt, bar of soap, soft
toy and toddler outfit. All are bundled into a receiving blanket. The layettes
are shipped to hospitals and orphanages in such ountries
as Haiti, Guatemala and Nigeria, where they are distributed to young mothers
who may have nothing in which to wrap their newborn child.

| In
the Niagara Warehouse of Hope sewing room, Gail Mullen (far end) and
Hazel Shields sew tiny nightshirts for newborns in the developing
world. Each finished garment, along with two diapers, two safety pins,
a small stuffed toy and another small garment will be wrapped in a
receiving blanket as one layette package. |
